Assess Four Conditions Before Choosing One Continuous Route
Indoor-outdoor capture with simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) depends on the environment, control strategy, required deliverable accuracy, and validation method. A short transition with stable shared geometry can be tested as one route when control and independent checks are defined. Long outdoor distances, severe obstruction, open areas with few distinctive features, heavy traffic, and rain or snow increase risk and may require separate capture segments or another survey method.
The outdoor ratings, positioning configurations, and suitable field conditions of SHARE SLAM S20, SHARE SLAM S20 SE, SHARE SLAM S100, and the SHARE3DCAM C10 Series differ. Use the relevant product documentation and a representative field test; a shared software workflow does not imply identical hardware capability.

Figure 1: Plan an indoor loop, stable transition zone, outdoor control section, and validation checks.
Design the Transition
- Place the transition at a doorway, passage, or colonnade with stable features such as frames, columns, and wall corners.
- Plan loops and overlap from the floor plan, and record lighting, weather, pedestrian or vehicle traffic, and obstructions.
- When project coordinates are required, establish control points and separate independent check points along the outdoor section. Record their coordinates, time, environment, and signal status.
- If the transition lacks sufficient shared geometry or the route is too long, capture indoor and outdoor areas separately. Align them through manual corresponding-point registration using well-distributed fixed features, then verify the result independently.
| Condition | Main risk | Planning response |
|---|---|---|
| Strong sunlight or backlighting | Image overexposure and changing visual features | Change capture time or route and manage exposure conditions |
| Rain, snow, or mist | Noise and equipment environmental risk | Reschedule and follow the equipment requirements |
| Heavy pedestrian or vehicle traffic | Occlusion, ghosting, and trajectory interference | Clear the area, capture at a quieter time, or recapture critical zones |
| Open area with few distinctive features | Weak SLAM constraints | Add stable features or control, shorten segments, or use another survey method |
| Long outdoor route | Accumulated trajectory error | Use shorter controlled segments, external PPK where applicable, and independent checks |
Use External PPK Within Its Boundary
Post-processed kinematic (PPK) computation is completed in an external tool using rover, base-station, and navigation data. After checking the resulting RTKLIB POS trajectory for continuity and solution quality, use it in SHARE PointClouds Studio only as the Trajectory Source in GNSS Fusion. This global navigation satellite system (GNSS) input does not replace control points, manual registration where needed, or independent three-dimensional and elevation checks.
Review the Transition and Deliverables

Figure 2: Review the indoor-outdoor transition through linked trajectory and field imagery.
Inspect the transition in the trajectory, photo points, photographs, and point cloud. Check for gaps, duplicated surfaces, vertical steps, local drift, and misalignment. Validate position and elevation separately with independent check points; visual overlap alone is not an accuracy test.
Three-dimensional Gaussian splatting (3DGS) can support photorealistic viewing but is not a measurement result. Computer-aided design (CAD) drafting should use the point cloud and requires manual review. CAD drafting export generates both drawing exchange format (DXF) and DWG files, and both are included in the exported ZIP package. RVT, IFC, and complete building information modeling (BIM) deliverables require downstream professional work.
Network and Support Boundary
Without an available network, login may not complete, some advanced functions such as 3DGS may not work normally, and logs cannot be uploaded. Preserve the project, trajectory, outputs, and local diagnostic material when a task fails. When connectivity is available, submit sanitized data and reproduction steps through the approved support channel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SHARE SLAM scan continuously from indoors to outdoors?
A short, feature-rich transition can be evaluated as one route when controls and acceptance checks are defined. Confirm the specific device and project through documentation and a representative test.
What if the doorway has few stable features?
Add stable identifiable geometry where permitted, or capture the areas separately and use manual corresponding-point registration plus independent checks.
Can external PPK solve every weak-signal case?
No. It can provide an externally computed POS trajectory for GNSS Fusion, but base-station data, timing, trajectory quality, and independent acceptance checks remain necessary.
How do I check for an elevation step at the transition?
Perform separate three-dimensional and elevation checks with independent points concentrated around the transition and other high-risk areas.
Can 3DGS be used for measurements or CAD delivery?
No. Use the point cloud for measurement and drafting. The CAD export ZIP contains both DXF and DWG files and still requires manual review.
